‘TEMPE’ TRADITIONAL FOOD FROM INDONESIA

Source of picture : wikipedia

Tempe is one of Indonesian traditional food which made from soybean. Originally it comes from Java Island, then spread all over Indonesia. Tempe produced by natural fermentation process and wrapped in plastic or wrapped in banana leaves. Its became one of a favourite menu in every breakfast, lunch and dinner for Indonesian people, while the other menu is tofu. Whether they eat chicken, meat or fish, they always looking for tempe and tofu to complete their eating time. It seem there’s something left if there’s no tempe in the menu. Therefore, no doubt, tempe has its own place in the heart of every Indonesian.

When heard the name of ‘tempe’, its sounds very Indonesian. If we look back to the origin of tempe, we will found that the history of tempe cannot separated from the history of Indonesia, itself. Tempe was founded during dutch colonialization in Indonesia. At that time, Dutch implemented Cultivation system or culturstelsel for the inlanders or locals. Dutch consume chicken, meat, and fish but on the other side inlanders or locals consume cheap food derived from cassava and soybean, of which tempe is made. Since that time until now, tempe became popular in Indonesia.

Eventhough tempe is a cheap food but doesn’t mean it has no nutritions. tempe also popular for its rich nutrition such as protein and vitamin B. Tempe is good for your health. There’s so many types of tempe such as tempe mendoan, tempe bacem, plain-fried tempe, sambel tempe, tempe crackers, tempe oncom, tempe gembus, sate tempe, tempe oncom and etc. You can find those easily with a low price in every Indonesian market.

Tempe not only popular in Indonesia but it is also popular in Japan, Europe and America. The good taste of tempe and its nutrition make this food more popular in other country. The bad news is Japan already registered the patent rights for tempe. The government should pay more attention to
protect Indonesian heritage, tradition and culture.

Tradition and culture is an identity of nation. Indonesia should be proud for having tempe. i like tempe. So, how about you ? 

TAIWAN ‘SEED’

TAIWAN. This country is quite familiar for me since i was a child. My parents is a teachers but they do farming too. Sometimes, after school or in holiday, they took me to the field, see and help them cultivating the land or harvesting the crops. So my memory of the word ‘Taiwan’ start here.

When i helped my parents to plant some vegetables and fruits i saw that the seed is made in Taiwan. At that time, i ask why we use this?, what is Taiwan? a sincere question from a child. The my parents answered me, They said, this a good quality seed, we can multiply the crops using this seed and Taiwan is a country who invented this seed. Oh, i see. I replied it.

It reminds me again, when i visited Taiwan Last year, i saw they have a good quality of seed, strong farm association (there’s several farm association), great support from government such as give technical support and amount of fund for farmers. The association provide the market for the farmers product and they have a bank, so the farmers can loan the money and use it to develop their farming business. What a good system that we should learn.

The other interesting is they also develop agricultural tourism. So, people can learn about their agriculture and in the same time also can enjoy the view. Wonderful..

The opening ceremony held on friday and then we have leisure time at the weekend. So, we decided to walking around on saturday, and most of the participant from about 30 countries joined this trip.

Our first destination is Taipei zoo, we really want to see Panda. To get there we using MRT. And the story of getting lost started here. One of our friends lost at taipei main station, we found difficulties to find her because, the station are very crowded. We are yelling her name, where are you ? Finally, we can find her then.

The other getting lost also happen after we arrived at taipei zoo, we make an appoinment to meet up with all friends at 2 o clock at the exit gate. But, at 2 o'clock the two friends were not show their face, may be they are to busy to see the animal. May be because they didn't have it in their countries. Again, we finally find them then.

The last getting lost is when we go back to the center.. there's 2 friends lost in taoyuan station, not really big station, but also crowded. Can you guest who are them? yeah, one of them is me.. who completed that day as a day of getting lost. Because i'm tired during the day so i lost my focus to follow my friends. Fortunatelly, and Thank God my friends can find me.

Tips for you who travel in group :
Please stay close to the group, and tell friend if you want to stop or looking something. In case you are getting lost, dont panic, stay on the place you lost, hopefully your group will come to find you.

Dutch influence in Indonesia

Indonesia and Netherland had a very long history which connected one to another. Indonesia was one of the dutch colony so-called Dutch East Indies beside Antilles islands, Aruba and Suriname. I remembered when i was in the school, my teachers taught the student that Dutch occupied Indonesia for about 350 years (but that period of time is now became debatable, some historian said it less than 350 years). Then Indonesia declare its independence on 17th august 1945. To got recognition from Netherland, Indonesia have to had long way negotiation and diplomacy such as Linggarjati agreement, Renville agreement, Roem-van Roijen agreement, and Dutch-Indonesian round table conference. Finally, Netherland recognize Indonesia sovereignity on 27th december 1949.

No one country in this world wants to colonized by other country. No one people in this world wants to become slave for other country. But, lets look it in a positive way. Having colonized by dutch for a long time, Indonesia got impact in so many aspect. Dutch influence exist at all over Indonesia. We can see some of them until now. So, here it is.

1. Some Indonesian law adopted from Dutch law.
Burgerlijk wetboek, wetboek van koophandel, wetboek van strafrecht, het herziene Indonesisch reglemet are regulation made by the Dutch and it is still exist with some modification depend on Indonesian needs.

2. Old building.
Most of Indonesian old buildings  are the rest of dutch colonial such as gedung sate, istana bogor, istana merdeka, lawang sewu, gedung merdeka bandung, fatahillah museum and etc.

3. Dutch technology.
Dutch is very famous for its hi-tech construction. In Indonesia we can see katoelampa dam, pacal dam, daendels road, saka lima belas (sakalibel bridge), sugar factory and etc.

4. Plantation In the Dutch colonial era, they implemented Cultivation system or culturstelsel for the indigenous people. At that time, Dutch bring some plantation and sell  its product in the Europe market such as coffee, tobacco, tea, orange, sugar cane and etc.

5. Foods Some Indonesian foods originally comes from Netherland such as parkedel (fracadel), lapis legit (spekkoek), kue batang keju (kaastengels), and klappertaart.

Experience is the best teacher. We can learn from our history and we should remember our history. Indonesian founding father, Ir. Soekarno said that Never leave history (Jas Merah).

5 Places To Visit in Malaysia

Malaysia located at the southeast Asia with Kuala Lumpur as a capital city and Putrajaya as a capital federal administrative. This country has 3 main ethnic groups that is Malay, Chinese and Indian. Those ethnic groups influence each others, what a colourful Malaysia. They have slogan “1 Malaysia (One Malaysia)” to emphasize about ethnic harmony. 1 Malaysia designed by Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Rajak on 16 September 2010. That slogan similar to Indonesia’s slogan “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” means unity in diversity. It is inscribed in the Indonesian national symbol and is mentioned specifically in article 36A of the Constitution of Indonesia. Actually, Malaysia and Indonesia have similarity in so many things. But, I’m not going to talk deeper about this, because it is very sensitive for both Malaysia and Indonesia.

Ok, lets get back to the topic. I think every tropical countries in the world are beautiful. Malaysia is one of the tropical country, as do all countries at southeast Asia. Malaysia also has a good facilities and infrastructures to support tourism needs. Beside that, most of local people can speak English very well, so it’s easier for foreigners to communicate with them. I went to Malaysia 3 years ago and I found it was a nice country, they also had a delicious food, I also can communicate well because Indonesia and Malaysia had similar language. But, one thing that I dislike during the trip was unkind of local people, especially to Indonesian tourist. I guess may be it is because a bad tension between Indonesia and Malaysia at that time. Actually, they are a good people, I just came not in a right time. Now, The relation between Indonesia and Malaysia are getting better. Pretty job from both countries.

Talking about tourist destination in Malaysia, there’s 5 places to visit that is Petronas Twin Tower, Genting Highlands, Batu Caves, Istana Negara (King’s palace)and Sungei Wang.

1. Petronas Twin Tower

Genting skyway system provides 3.38 kolimetres transport to the hilltop. I prefer to choose genting skyway than car because I found that it is interesting to see and enjoy the mountain view during the journey.

Genting Highlands offers huge entertainment and fun. Everybody can enjoy amusement parks which consist of an oudoor park, an indoor park and water park. Genting Highlands also famous for its casino, this is the place that you can find the legal land-based casino.

You also can find several hotels there. The most popular hotel is the First World Hotel which holds the Guinness World of Records as the largest hotel in the world from 2006 until 2008 with a total of 6,118 rooms.

The height of the statue is 42.7 metres. Lord Murugun statue is the tallest statue of Hindu deity in Malaysia and the second tallest statue of Hindu deity in the world, after Kailashnath Mahadev Statue in Nepal. When i went there, I’m very surprised seeing that statue. It is really big.

Batu caves area consist of three main caves. The biggest has a very high ceiling and features ornate Hindu shrines. If you want to go there, you must climb a steep of 272 steps.

The interesting thing about this place is the guards who are wearing Malay traditional attire and they stand by at the main gateway. The aim is to preserve tradition of the Malay Sultanate. It is also success attracting tourist attention.

5. Sungei Wang
In most of my articles I always remember to write about Shopping places because I know for some of us, we have tradition to buy souvenir or gift for family and friends. So, if you plan to go to Malaysia, you can stop by here, Sungei Wang. Sungei means river, Wang means money, so everyday money flows like a river here, The guide told me that.

Sungei Wang is the most popular shopping place in Kuala Lumpur. You will find goods with international and local brands. There’s also ATM and money changer here.

Interesting Place in Singapore

Who didn’t know Singapore? For Asian people, Singapore was very familiar to them. Singapore located in Southeast Asia, a small country with total area 710 Km2 and population about 5 million people. Singapore separated from Malaysia by the strait of Johor in the north and separated from Indonesia by the Singapore Strait in the south. Even though Singapore was a small country, we should not look at it with one eye. Because the fact is Singapore leading in all aspect, including tourism and its facilities.

Talking about tourism in Singapore sounds interesting and it is true. I’ve been there two times. The first time, I went there at 2011, spent a day and then continued to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) for the next day. And the second, I went there at 2012, spent 3 days and it was really enjoyable moment and of course gave me enough time to explore Singapore. From those experiences, I would like to suggest for travellers some interesting place in Singapore.

In the Hollywood themed zone, there’s special character appearances from Po Kung Fu Panda, Frankenstein’s Monster, Woody Woodpecker, Winnie Woodpecker, Marilyin Monroe, Charlie Chaplin, Beetlejuice and Betty Boop.

The most interesting attraction for me is The pair of dueling roller coasters, Battlestar Galactica : Human Vs Cylon at the Sci Fi City themed zone. This is a high speed roller coasters. The height is 42.7 metres. Human (red track) is seated roller coasters, and Cylon (blue track) is inverted roller coasters. I’ve tried both of them, and I think Cylon is crazy! I felt my heart stop beating for a few second, then continued to breath again. it’s Challenging the adrenaline.

Universal Studios Singapore theme park is really comfortable place. It has so many restaurants and souvenir shops located around the park. It is also give easiness to get the ticket for people who want to visit there. We can purchase it from its website http://www.rwsentosa.com/Homepage/Attractions/UniversalStudiosSingapore . Every big city in the world has its own problem. it depends on how the government manage that problem to make it better. In Jakarta, we can see traffic jam during work hours and air pollution covered the city. Based on the Jakarta condition’s, perhaps Jakarta needs more an open space area for social activity, sport, creativity and etc. That’s the beginning of the ‘Car Free Day’ idea in Jakarta.

Car Free Day held by so many cities and countries all over the world, such Bogota, France and etc. September 22th is World Car Free Day. Jakarta Car Free Day has started since 2005. ·   South Jakarta municipality       : Jl. Sisingamangaraja;

From all the location which mentioned above, I recommend Jl. Sudirman - Jl. MH Thamrin than the others. we can easily find the access to get to this road because its location in the center of Jakarta. We can get there by using public transportation, Transjakarta was operated at the Car Free Day event. Along the road from Jl. Sudirman to Jl. The best moment here is play at the beach, you can see a beautiful sand and colorful layers of water that is dark blue, light blue and dark green.
